Guy Belleranti
Writer of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, puzzles and humor for children and adults
I was born in Wisconsin and was the middle of three children and the only boy. It was tough being sandwiched between two sisters ... but, please, don't tell them I said that :-)
After I finished kindergarten, my family moved to Arizona for seven years. This was when I did my first bit of writing. First, I created a little newspaper, one which actually had no news. Instead, it was filled with facts about animals of the present and dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals of the past. I also created a comic book series and put it in my newspaper for variety. I don't remember much about the series, except that the main character was a boy with spiky hair. Then, during one summer vacation, I created a book and titled it "Prehistoric Animals". I filled the book with color pencil illustrations, facts and pronunciation guides of every dinosaur and prehistoric animal I could find. I still have this book today. My little newspapers, alas, are long gone.
As a kid, I did a lot of reading about animals. I also had numerous pets, including turtles, toads, salamanders, a dog, tropical fish and weird fish from a friend's pond. Unfortunately, the weird fish weren't fish, but instead turned out to be mosquito larvae which began hatching in my bedroom!
I wasn't happy when my family moved back to Wisconsin after seven years. This meant leaving my friends and a warm climate for a very cold one. So I made a silent vow to someday return to the southwest and its beautiful deserts, canyons and mountains. And years later, I did. And that's where I made my first professional writing sale - a humorous filler to Arizona Highways Magazine. I haven't stopped writing since and hope I never have to. I need to write, to create.
Why do I write what I write? Well, I love a good story, especially one filled with mystery, suspense and/or humor. And I love animals. In fact, I spend time around cool animals as a docent at the local zoo. Here I talk to children and adults about animals large and small and about the importance of conservation and wild habitat preservation. This love for animals has found its way into my writing for children, writing which includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, puzzles and jokes and riddles.
I love getting out among nature, traveling and listening to music. And like all writers, I love to read.
